80/20 Digital CEO Colm MacGowan responding to being found on Claude.ai

Key Takeaways

    • Buyers are no longer searching using simple keywords. They are having detailed conversations with AI to qualify providers before visiting websites.

    • More than 60% of searches now result in no click, as users increasingly get answers directly from AI-driven search experiences.

    • AI-referred leads are often more qualified because much of the buying decision happens before the website visit.

    • Reviews, reputation, authority and specialisation are becoming critical ranking and recommendation signals.

    • Businesses that consistently communicate expertise across their entire digital footprint will dominate AI-driven discovery over the next few years.

    • Traditional SEO is evolving into a broader trust and authority strategy across websites, reviews, content, social media and third-party platforms.

Yesterday, I had two completely different businesses enquire about digital marketing.

One was a 15-year-old bookkeeping practice in Melbourne. The other was a start-up psychiatry practice on the Gold Coast.

Different industries. Different locations. Different business models.

But both started the conversation the exact same way.

“We found you on Claude.”

So naturally, I asked what I still believe is the most important question in marketing:

“How did you find us?”

What they explained perfectly captured how the customer journey is changing in 2026. Neither of them searched Google first.

Instead, they opened Claude and asked detailed questions like:

“Who are the best digital marketing agencies for small to medium businesses with experience in bookkeeping?”

and

“Which digital agency understands medical practices and provides website design and SEO solutions under one roof?”

This is the important part most businesses are still missing. AI search is not behaving like traditional search. People are no longer typing two or three keywords into Google and clicking through 10 blue links. They are having whole conversations. They are qualifying providers before they ever visit a website.

Search Is Becoming Conversational

For years, businesses approached SEO like a keyword game. Find the highest-volume search phrase: optimise a page, rank it on Google, generate clicks, get an enquiry, secure a sale.

But conversational AI has fundamentally changed how people search.

Users are now asking:

  • nuanced questions
  • highly specific buying queries
  • industry-based recommendations
  • trust-based comparisons
  • experience-led qualification questions

They are testing businesses for industry specialisation, credibility, expertise, authority, trustworthiness, reputation and fit.

And importantly, they are often spending up to 13 minutes on AI platforms per session. Search is no longer just discovery. It is deep qualification.

The New Customer Journey

Both prospects explained something incredibly important. After receiving recommendations from Claude, they then moved to Google to validate those recommendations.

They checked our website, Google reviews, case studies, awards, and overall credibility. Only then did they make contact.

This matters because AI-driven discovery behaves very differently from traditional search traffic.

The user arriving on your website is increasingly pre-qualified, trust-aware, highly intentional and further along the buying cycle.

In many cases, they are almost pre-sold before the click even happens.

A major Adobe survey in March 2026, showed that AI search converted 42% better than non-AI traffic like email marketing and paid search.

Why Zero-Click Search Matters

Recent studies also suggest more than 60% of Google searches now end without a click to another website. In AI-driven search environments, that number is even higher.

According to SEMRush research referenced following Google I/O 2026, some AI Mode sessions may see 92-94% zero-click behaviour.

That does not mean search is dying. Far from it. Search usage is actually increasing. But users are interacting with search differently.

AI platforms are becoming recommendation engines; research assistants who will qualify ruthlessly before users ever reach your website.

What This Means for Small Business Lead Generation

The businesses that will dominate AI-driven discovery over the next few years will not necessarily be the ones producing the most content. They will be the brands that:

  • differentiate themselves clearly
  • communicate expertise consistently
  • specialise visibly
  • build strong reputations
  • maintain trust signals across the web

Because AI platforms are not just looking at websites anymore. They are evaluating your entire digital footprint.

That includes:

  • reviews
  • case studies
  • social proof
  • authority signals
  • website content
  • LinkedIn presence
  • brand mentions
  • customer sentiment
  • industry positioning

If You Were Doing SEO Properly, You’re Already Ahead

One of the biggest misconceptions right now is that “AI SEO” is completely different from traditional SEO. It isn’t.

If you were already building unique brand positioning with useful content and topical authority, Google was already using these trust signals to rank you. Similarly, customer reviews are paramount. If anything, they are more important than ever.

What’s changing is the weighting. Search is shifting from keyword matching towards trust evaluation, reputation analysis and contextual understanding

That is the major shift.

But it also creates an enormous opportunity for businesses that genuinely know their industry and communicate it well.

Being The Most Trusted Answer

The future of search is no longer about ranking for a single keyword. It is about becoming the most trusted answer.

Because increasingly, the buying journey starts long before the click. Now it starts with:

“Who’s the best business for this?”

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “We found you on Claude” mean?

It means potential customers are increasingly using AI platforms like Claude to research and qualify businesses before visiting websites or making enquiries.

No. AI is changing how people use search. Many users now begin with AI conversations and then use Google for validation, reviews and credibility checks.

Conversational search refers to users asking full, natural-language questions instead of short keyword phrases. Platforms like ChatGPT, Claude and Google Gemini are accelerating this behaviour.

A zero-click search happens when a user gets the information they need directly from Google or an AI platform without clicking through to another website.

Businesses should focus on:

  • strong reviews
  • clear industry positioning
  • authoritative content
  • consistent branding
  • customer trust signals
  • reputation management
  • demonstrating real expertise

Absolutely. Strong SEO fundamentals remain critical. But SEO is increasingly evolving beyond keywords into broader trust, authority and reputation optimisation.
